Aditya Birla Group on Monday declared indefinite lock out of Jaya Shree Textiles in Hooghly’s Rishra following alleged illegal strike by a section of the workers. Jaya Shree Textiles, a unit of Grasim industries, is the largest textile unit in Bengal and one of the largest in eastern India. It employs 5,700 workers, out of which 4,200 are on the company’s direct payroll.
Founded just after independence by doyen of Indian industry GD Birla, the unit has a yearly revenue of Rs 2,000 crore, the highest in any unit in eastern India.
The state government and local administration has rushed in to resolve the issue. State labour minister Moloy Ghatak said he hoped that the issue will be resolved in the next few days.
“The total loss of revenue in the last 20 days has already exceeded Rs 100 crore. It was not possible to continue with this illegal strike,” he added. Several meetings had been held earlier this month, but they failed to solve this impasse.
