Mamata Banerjee Writes to Chief Election Commissioner Over Removal of Top Bengal Officials

n a strongly worded communication to the Election Commission of India, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised serious concerns over the sudden removal of the state’s top administrative officials shortly after the announcement of the Assembly election schedule.

According to the Chief Minister, within hours of the poll dates being declared, the Election Commission ordered the removal of the state’s Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police, effectively replacing the entire top administrative leadership of the government.

In her letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, Banerjee pointed out that no allegations of misconduct, bias, or electoral irregularities had been made against any of the officials concerned. She also questioned why such a sweeping decision was taken without consultation with the state government, arguing that it departs from long-standing constitutional conventions governing the relationship between the Election Commission and elected state administrations.

The Chief Minister described the move as unprecedented in the context of India’s electoral history and urged the Commission to uphold the principles of neutrality and institutional integrity.

“The credibility of the Election Commission is not the property of any political party. It belongs to the people of India,” Banerjee wrote, emphasizing that protecting the independence and reputation of constitutional institutions is essential for maintaining public trust in the democratic process.

The development has sparked a fresh debate over the powers of the Election Commission of India during election periods and the extent to which it can intervene in state administrative structures to ensure free and fair polling.

As the state moves closer to the Assembly elections, the issue is likely to remain at the centre of political and constitutional discussions in the coming days.
