Sovan Chatterjee: Navigating the Evolving Landscape of Bengal Politics

In the dynamic arena of West Bengal politics, few figures possess a narrative as layered and enduring as Sovan Chatterjee. A seasoned leader with deep roots in Kolkata’s civic and political fabric, the former Mayor’s journey continues to draw attention. As the state moves toward the 2026 Assembly elections, his role—both as an experienced administrator and a prominent political figure—reflects the adaptive nature of leadership in the region.

Chatterjee’s political foundation was cemented in 2011 when he secured the Behala Purba seat during the rise of the All India Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. His tenure as Mayor of Kolkata (2010–2018) remains a defining chapter, marked by a hands-on approach to urban governance and civic administration.

His brief shift to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019 was widely seen as a phase of strategic recalibration. While expectations around a more prominent electoral role during the 2021 Assembly elections did not fully materialize, his subsequent exit—alongside his partner Baisakhi Banerjee—signaled a turning point. Chatterjee himself framed the move as a moment of clarity, eventually leading to his return to his political roots.

The “homecoming” in late 2025 marked a renewed phase. Rejoining the TMC, he was appointed Chairman of the Newtown Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), underscoring his continued relevance in governance. While speculation surrounded his potential candidacy in 2026, the party’s strategy took a different turn. In the recently announced candidate list, his wife Ratna Chatterjee—a former MLA from Behala Purba—has been fielded from Behala Paschim, reinforcing the family’s established influence in the region.

Throughout these political shifts, Chatterjee’s association with Baisakhi Banerjee has remained a consistent aspect of his public life. Even as he navigates legal challenges, including proceedings linked to the Narada sting operation case, he continues to maintain visibility in the political landscape.

While he may not be contesting directly in the 2026 elections, observers believe his administrative experience and political legacy will continue to shape the discourse. As the campaign unfolds, attention will remain on how his governance expertise and the family’s regional foothold influence West Bengal’s evolving political narrative.
