The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its second list of 111 candidates for the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, sharpening its electoral strategy with a mix of seasoned leaders, cultural figures, and region-specific influencers.
The announcement, made by the party’s Central Election Committee, comes shortly after its initial list of 144 candidates and reflects a calibrated push to consolidate its position against the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). With polling scheduled for April 23 and 29, the BJP appears to be intensifying its focus on high-stakes constituencies across the state.

Strategic Redeployments Signal High Stakes
The list is led by former Union Minister Nisith Pramanik, who has been fielded from Mathabhanga (SC), underscoring the party’s emphasis on North Bengal—a region central to its electoral ambitions.
In South 24 Parganas, the BJP has nominated veteran actress and former Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly from Sonarpur Dakshin, setting the stage for a high-profile contest. Actor-turned-politician Papiya Adhikari has been fielded from Tollygunge, while Hiranmoy Chattopadhyay returns to the fray from Shyampur after his earlier electoral success in Kharagpur Sadar.
Leveraging Local Influence and Political Networks
The candidate selection reflects a clear strategy to tap into regional power structures and established networks. Dibyendu Adhikari has been nominated from Egra, reinforcing the Adhikari family’s influence in Purba Medinipur, led by Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.
In Barrackpore, lawyer Kaustav Bagchi has been fielded, while sitting MLA Pawan Singh will defend Noapara. In Kolkata’s Entally constituency, Priyanka Tibrewal—who previously contested against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee—has once again been entrusted with a key electoral battle.
The party has also nominated veteran leader Tapas Roy from Maniktala, setting up a direct contest against his former party after his recent switch from the TMC.
Regional Precision and Demographic Outreach
The second list spans critical regions including North Bengal, Murshidabad, and Nadia, reflecting a granular approach to constituency-level dynamics. In the Darjeeling hills, Noman Rai has been fielded from Darjeeling, while former Indian hockey captain Bharat Chetri will contest from Kalimpong, bringing sporting prominence into the political arena.
In the politically crucial Murshidabad belt, candidates such as Mitali Mal (Khargram), Gargi Das Ghosh (Kandi), and Anamika Ghosh (Bharatpur) have been nominated, indicating the BJP’s intent to make inroads into traditionally TMC-dominated rural pockets.
The party has also demonstrated tactical flexibility by replacing candidates in select constituencies like Bishnupur and Joypur based on internal feedback, signaling a performance-driven approach.
Countdown to a High-Stakes Contest
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up to be a fiercely contested political battle. With Suvendu Adhikari already fielded from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the first list, the BJP’s second list completes a significant portion of its electoral lineup.
- By deploying a diverse mix of political veterans, professionals, and public figures, the BJP is projecting administrative readiness and a strong challenge to the incumbent government. As campaigning intensifies, the focus now shifts to ground-level mobilization ahead of the decisive counting day on May 4.
