In a significant move aimed at ensuring passenger safety, India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has issued a fresh advisory asking airlines to avoid multiple high-risk airspaces across West Asia following escalating geopolitical tensions.
The directive comes in the wake of recent military strikes involving the United States and Israel targeting locations in Iran, and subsequent retaliatory measures announced by Tehran. The regulator has described the situation as a “high-risk environment for civil aviation,” prompting immediate precautionary steps.
Airspaces to Avoid
The DGCA has instructed Indian carriers to avoid flying through the airspaces of several countries, including Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
However, operations over Oman and Saudi Arabia remain permissible under strict conditions.
Operational Restrictions and Safety Measures
Airlines have been directed not to operate flights below Flight Level 320 (32,000 feet) in designated airspace zones over Saudi Arabia and Oman, particularly south of specified reporting points.
Additionally, the DGCA has emphasized the need for:
Robust contingency planning for flights operating near or within affected regions
Comprehensive safety risk assessments to mitigate evolving threats
Real-time pilot briefings, ensuring crews are updated with the latest NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen)
These measures are intended to equip airlines to handle sudden diversions, rerouting, or emergency situations mid-flight.

The advisory is expected to significantly disrupt international aviation routes, especially flights connecting India to Europe and North America. Airlines may now be forced to take longer alternative routes, increasing both travel time and fuel costs.
Major carriers like Air India and IndiGo had already begun adjusting schedules and cancelling select west-bound flights even before the formal directive was issued.
