Spain Closes Airspace to US Military Over Iran Conflict, Criticizes Attacks

Short News Post:
As of March 30, 2026, Spain has officially closed its airspace to US military aircraft involved in operations against Iran. Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed that the restriction also applies to the jointly operated bases at Rota and Morón.

The ban covers all US flight plans related to Iran, including refueling missions and transits via third countries. Exceptions are limited to emergencies or non-war-related NATO logistical support.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and other officials labeled the US-Israel attacks on Iran as “illegal” and “reckless,” highlighting violations of international law. The restriction forces US bombers, including B-52s and B-1Bs stationed at RAF Fairford in the UK, to reroute around the Iberian Peninsula, increasing mission times and fuel costs.

Spain’s move marks the country as the most vocal NATO critic of the conflict, following weeks of escalating tension since February 28, 2026.
