In a statement shared via social media, the President emphasized that while the temporary halt in hostilities is a vital step toward de-escalation, the international community must now pivot toward a long-term diplomatic resolution.
”I welcome the two-week ceasefire the US and Iran agreed last night. It brings much-needed de-escalation,” von der Leyen stated. “I thank Pakistan for its mediation. Now it is crucial that negotiations for an enduring solution to this conflict continue.”
A Diplomatic Breakthrough
The ceasefire comes after a period of heightened tensions that had many global leaders on edge. The role of Pakistan as a mediator has been highlighted as a cornerstone of this success, proving the efficacy of “middle-power” diplomacy in resolving Great Power frictions.
The Path Forward
The European Union remains committed to ensuring this pause in conflict isn’t just a “breather,” but a bridge to a lasting treaty. Von der Leyen confirmed that the EU will continue to coordinate closely with international partners to stabilize the region and prevent a return to active combat.
