Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday described the ongoing 2026 Assam Assembly elections as more than just a political contest, calling it a “historic movement” to safeguard the state’s identity, culture, and civilisational values.
Taking to social media, Sarma said the election represents a collective resolve of the people of Assam to protect their land from illegal infiltration and demographic challenges.

“What we set out to do was not merely fight an election, but to turn it into a movement — a movement to protect our civilisational values, our culture, and our land,” he stated.
Highlighting unprecedented voter enthusiasm, the Chief Minister noted that people turned out in record numbers, with participation reportedly crossing 95% in several polling booths.
“For the first time, our people have come out in unprecedented numbers — voting shoulder to shoulder, matching and even surpassing our opponents in turnout.
This is not ordinary. This is historic,” he said.
Sarma emphasized that the electorate had risen above divisions of language and caste, uniting behind a singular goal — safeguarding Assam’s identity.
“This is not just an election. This is a watershed moment in Assam’s history,” he added, pointing to what he described as visible public optimism and pride.
In a strong closing message, the Chief Minister asserted:
“Assam will not surrender. Assam will fight. Assam will survive. Assam will endure.”
The high voter turnout and charged political atmosphere have made the 2026 Assam Assembly elections one of the most closely watched contests in recent years.
