Hyderabad Neurologist Warns Against Rapid Weight Loss, Urges Rethink on Obesity

Hyderabad Neurologist Warns Against Rapid Weight Loss, Urges Sustainable Approach

In an age dominated by quick-fix diets and rapid body transformations, a medical expert is calling for patience and a more balanced perspective. Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, has cautioned against the growing obsession with fast weight loss, highlighting its potential risks.

Obesity Is Not an ‘Emergency’

Taking to social media on April 10, Dr Kumar addressed the increasing popularity of aggressive weight-loss methods. He emphasised that while obesity is a serious health issue, it should not be treated like an urgent medical crisis requiring immediate results.

According to him, obesity is a chronic condition that develops over time and should be managed gradually—not reversed in days or weeks. The pressure to lose weight quickly, often driven by marketing trends, can lead to unrealistic expectations and unhealthy practices.

The Risks of Rapid Weight Loss

Dr Kumar warned that forcing the body to lose weight rapidly can trigger harmful physiological reactions. Instead of improving health, crash diets and extreme methods may disrupt the body’s natural balance and lead to adverse effects.

He noted that the numbers on the scale don’t tell the full story—rapid weight loss often comes at the cost of overall well-being. In many cases, such approaches can backfire, doing more harm than good in the long run.

Focus on Sustainable Health

The expert stressed the importance of adopting a steady, sustainable approach to weight management. Rather than chasing quick results, individuals should focus on long-term lifestyle changes that support overall health.
