Halle Berry has confirmed she is engaged to musician Van Hunt, putting an end to speculation that she had previously turned down his marriage proposal.
Actor Halle Berry has officially confirmed her engagement to singer-songwriter Van Hunt, clarifying recent rumours that suggested she had declined his proposal. The Oscar-winning actor revealed that while the couple is engaged, they have not yet set a wedding date.
Berry addressed the confusion during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she explained that her comments had been misunderstood. “There’s some confusion that he asked to marry me, and I said no,” Berry said. When host Jimmy Fallon asked if that was true, she quickly clarified, “No, that’s not the case. I did not say ‘no,’ we just don’t have a date. Of course, I said ‘yes, I would marry him.’”
Fallon congratulated the couple, calling them “a great couple,” to which Berry responded warmly. During the interview, the actor also showed off her engagement ring, joking, “Thank you. He did put a little ring on it.” Fallon playfully reacted to the ring’s size, saying, “Oh, a little.”
The clarification comes months after Van Hunt told Today.com in June 2025 that he had proposed to Berry, but suggested the proposal was still “on hold.” At the time, Hunt hinted that Berry’s hesitation may have stemmed from her past marriages. “I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold, as you can see,” he said. “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”
Berry has previously been married three times. She was first married to former Major League Baseball player David Justice from 1993 to 1997, followed by musician Eric Benet, whom she married in 2001 before separating in 2005. Her most recent marriage was to actor Olivier Martinez, which ended in 2016. Van Hunt was also previously married and later divorced.
Speaking earlier to Today.com, Berry explained that her relationship with Hunt feels different from her past experiences. “I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” she said. “It’s not because we feel like we have to, but because we want to.”
Halle Berry and Van Hunt first met in 2020 and grew close while connecting virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. Berry made their relationship Instagram official in September that year, and the couple later made their first red carpet appearance together at the 2021 Academy Awards.
