Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Centre while addressing a political rally in Velachery ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Kharge alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party attempted to “play a dangerous game” in Parliament by linking women’s reservation with delimitation based on the 2011 Census. He claimed that such a move would have reduced Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament instead of rewarding the state for its development progress.
“The Congress party in Delhi led from the front, and all opposition parties stood united to oppose this bill. Together, we defeated the Modi government’s attempt. This is not a small victory—it is a victory for justice and federalism,” Kharge said.
Highlighting Centre-state relations, Kharge accused the BJP government of treating Tamil Nadu unfairly despite its significant contribution to the national economy. He pointed to issues such as a lower share of tax revenue allocation and alleged withholding of funds under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
He further criticised the Centre’s response to natural disasters, stating that assistance during floods and cyclones had been inadequate. Kharge also targeted the role of the Governor, accusing the office of interfering in the functioning of the elected state government instead of acting impartially.
The remarks come as political activity intensifies in Tamil Nadu ahead of the Assembly elections, with national parties sharpening their narratives around governance, federalism, and resource allocation.
