UN Chief António Guterres Backs Lebanon–Israel Ceasefire Extension, Calls for Lasting Peace

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a three-week extension to the cessation of hostilities arrangement between Lebanon and Israel, calling it a crucial opportunity to advance dialogue and de-escalation in the region.

In his statement, Guterres commended the role of the United States in facilitating the extension, highlighting Washington’s diplomatic efforts in maintaining fragile stability amid heightened tensions.

The UN chief stressed that all parties must fully respect the cessation of hostilities, cease further attacks, and adhere strictly to their obligations under international law. He underscored the importance of restraint and accountability to prevent further escalation.

Guterres also called on Hezbollah and other non-state actors to comply with the decisions of Lebanon, emphasizing the need to extend state authority across its territory and ensure the exclusive control of arms by the Lebanese state.

Addressing Israel, he urged a complete withdrawal from areas north of the Blue Line, reiterating long-standing UN positions on territorial sovereignty and compliance with international resolutions.

Expressing cautious optimism, the Secretary-General stated that the extension could contribute to broader diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

The development comes at a critical juncture, as regional and global stakeholders continue to push for sustained dialogue, de-escalation, and a durable political solution to one of the world’s most volatile conflicts.
