Earlier, Bajwa had assured the country that the army had distanced itself from Pakistan’s politics and would not play any role in politics in the future. It is to be known that Bajwa was given an extension on 29 November 2019. According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, General Bajwa, while addressing a gathering during a luncheon at the Pakistani embassy in Washington, said that he would retire after completing his second three-year term after two months.

Bajwa and PMLN supremo Nawaz Sharif had reportedly met in London recently, leading to speculation that Bajwa may get another term after the talks.
This could be the next army chief
After Bajwa retires, he is likely to be replaced by Rawalpindi Corps Commander Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Lt Gen Azhar Abbas, Lt Gen Nauman Mahmood Raja and Lt Gen Faiz Hameed. Three more names are also in the news for the Chief of Army Staff, including Gujranwala Corps Commander Gujranwala Muhammad Amir, Multan Corps Commander Lt Gen Chirag Haider and ISI DG Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum Sheikh.
