Bundesliga :Bochum Beat FC Beyern 4-2 In A Thriller

by Kolkata Today

Bochum came from a Robert Lewandowski goal down to stun leaders Bayern Munich 4-2 in one of the biggest Bundesliga shocks in living memory.

Only 147 days ago, VfL Bochum were beaten 7-0 by FC Bayern.Saturday , a slightly different story. What an afternoon at the Ruhrstadion,Bochum first victory against FC Bayern in 18 years.

Bochum beat Bayern in the Bundesliga for the first time since 14 Feberuary 2004.
FC Bayern conceded four first-half goals for the first time in the Bundesliga since 1975/76.

The writing appeared to be on the wall when Lewandowski controlled Kingsley Coman’s knockdown and fired in on the turn after nine minutes, but Bochum hadn’t read the script. Christopher Antwi-Adjei converted Gerrit Holtmann’s inch-perfect cross to level, though the hosts did need a goal-line clearance from Cristian Gamboa to prevent Lewandowski restoring Bayern’s advantage soon after. Bochum proceeded to run riot, with Jürgen Locadia scoring from the penalty spot after Dayot Upamecano was adjudged to have handled. Gamboa nutmegged Coman and smashed in an unstoppable third, before Holtmann curled in a sensational fourth towards the end of a wild first half.

The action showed no signs of abating after the restart as Patrick Osterhage and Antwi-Adjei had quick-fire efforts ruled out for offside. Bayern responded in kind as Lewandowski rounded Michael Esser, only to see his shot from a tight angle turned behind by Armel Bella-Kotchap.

Lewandowski scored his 25th and 26th Bundesliga goals of the season. He had the same number of strikes at the same juncture in 2020/21, when he broke the single-season goals record (41).

Bochum sat deeper and deeper as the half wore on, with their resistance breached in the 75th minute when Lewandowski volleyed in following a half-cleared Joshua Kimmich free-kick. Lewandowski fired against the crossbar with a set-piece of his own, but promoted Bochum held on for a famous win that takes them six points clear of the relegation play-off spot after 22 rounds of fixtures.

VfL Bochum coach Thomas Reis said ,”We’re very happy that we got the three points, points few expected us to get. On a day like this, a lot of things just fall into place. We wanted to suck the life out of Bayern’s football. The goals played their part. We’re happy to have picked up another three points in pursuit of our targets. I wish Julian and the team a lot of success in the Champions League, for me they’re a superb team.”

After the match FC Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said ,”Congratulations to Bochum, they played well, it was a deserved win. It was a rubbish game, we shouldn’t have allowed that to happen to us. We played very poorly in the first half. Our plan didn’t work. We should have reacted earlier, as we did in the second half. After their two wonder goals it was difficult, goals aren’t scored like that every day. In the first half, we were just too passive. The result in the first half was deserved. In the second half, we were better, except for the first few minutes. If we’d scored earlier in the second half, it might have got exciting again. In the end, it’s a deserved win for Bochum.”
