India is celebrating National Girl Child Day on January 24 to promote the rights, education, health, and nutrition of the girl child. The day was initiated by the Ministry of Women and child development, providing support and opportunity for girls in India. It is an initiative undertaken by the ministry with an objective to provide support and opportunities to the girls of India.
Why We celebrate National Girl Child Day
India’s National Girl Child Day is celebrated every year on 24th January to promote and support the girl child of the nation and remove gender-based biases. According to women and child development ministry, the day is meant to create awareness about the rights a girl owns and to give them opportunities like everyone else.
It also calls for promoting awareness about the inequalities that a girl child faces and educate people about girl’s education. The main focus is on changing society’s attitude towards girls, decrease female feticide and create awareness about decreasing sex ratio.
History and significance

Theme
The theme for National Girl Child Day is determined by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Arts and Sports. In the year 2021, the theme for the day was ‘Digital Generation, Our Generation’. The government has not announced any theme for this year’s girl child day.

Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2022
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with Rashtriya Bal Puraskar awardees as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a programme to recognise the achievements of children from across India. The winners of the award, along with their parents and concerned district magistrate of their respective district would join the event from their district headquarters.
Celebrations
The Ministry of Culture has organised an event named ‘Umang Rangoli Utsav’ as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The participants have to make rangoli decorations at 50 special locations across India. A kilometre-long rangoli will be done on the streets and squares named after the female freedom fighters of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually connect and felicitate the winners of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar.
National Girl Child Day is an occasion to reiterate our commitment and further strengthen ongoing efforts to empower the girl child. It is also a day to celebrate the exemplary accomplishments of the girl child in different fields.
