Joe Allen is fit enough to return
Target man Kieffer Moore will start after he came on and changed the game in their opener against the United States, while midfielder Joe Allen is fit enough to return to the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury. Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand misses the game after getting concussed and breaking his nose in their first game against England and is replaced by Seyed Hossein Hosseini. Iran striker Sardar Azmoun returns to the lineup after starting on the bench against England.

27′: Concern, CONCERN for IRAN
A lot of raised eyebrows in the Iranian camp since our last update. Sardar Azmoun is uneasy in the middle and receiving treatment for a calf problem that has kept him out for the last couple of months. It takes a minute or so before the Iranian fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Azmoun feels comfortable to continue.

37′: Opportunity for Wales
Harry Wilson locates Neco Williams on the left side of the Iranian goal, the latter botches the first touch however and Rezaeian makes a good challenge to avoid a what looked like a decent chance for Wales.

HALFTIME!
Wales have had significantly more share of the ball but it is Iran who have created more close chances including Gholizadeh’s goal that was overturned by the VAR. All level after 1st half.

WAL 0-0 IRN

53′: Action on the other side
Gareth Bale puts in a cross for Moore, who beats Hosseini but heads the ball onto the roof of the net. The Ahmed bin Ali Stadium can smell a goal coming anytime now.

84′: Hennessey SENT OFF!
The Welsh goalkeeper crosses oceans to cut off a brilliant long ball for Taremi and avoid a clear cut opportunity for Iran. The referee has only shown a yellow card but hang on, VAR check incoming for a red. AND RED IT IS. The first red card at this World Cup. The Welsh goalkeeper is off!

WAL vs IRN: Wales captain on the mic
Gareth Bale on BBC radio: “We are gutted. We fought till the last second. It’s one of those things difficult to take but you have to. (In the team huddle after match) I just said, keep going, we have to pick ourselves up. We have to …”

WAL 0-2 IRN

Well, that was intense. Congratulation to Iran, commiserations to Wales – but it’s still up for grabs in Group B. I’ll leave you with Ben Fisher’s report from the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, and don’t forget to join Tom Davies for Qatar v Senegal at 1pm. Bye!
