Germany have failed to get past the group stage at each of the last two World Cups, after they had made it past the first round in each of the previous 16 tournaments since 1954.
Kai Havertz rose from the bench to inspire Germany to a 4-2 comeback victory over Costa Rica, but it proved insufficient to avoid group-stage elimination for the second FIFA World Cup running. Serge Gnabry headed Germany ahead early on,but goals from Yeltsin Tejeda and Juan Pablo Vargas sent Costa Rica into a 2-1 lead.Serge Gnabry’s 21st goal for Germany was his first international goal scored with his head. He is the first German to score a headed goal at the World Cup since Mats Hummels in 2014 vs. France.
Havertz then scored twice before Niclas Fullkrug sealed a 4-2 victory.Japan’s reverse of Spain nonetheless saw Germany suffer elimination.
Kai Havertz is the second German player to score a brace as a substitute at the World Cup after Andre Schürrle in 2014 vs Brazil.
Manuel Neuer played his 19th World Cup game, eclipsing Sepp Maier and Taffarel and becoming the goalkeeper with the most appearances in the competition.
“For me personally, this is an absolute catastrophe,” Germany forward Thomas Muller, told German media after the match, before suggesting he will now retire from international football. “If this was my last game, I want to say a few words to our fans who have supported me for years. I have always tried to leave my heart on the field.”
