Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed the news on Friday 25 November, the day after Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0.

“Neymar and Danilo were re-evaluated today and, through the physical evaluation, we thought it was important that they did an MRI.
“The scans showed a lateral ligament injury in Neymar’s right ankle, along with a small bone swelling, and a medial ligament injury in Danilo’s left ankle. But they remain in treatment, with the aim of getting them back in time for this competition.”

Neymar said the injury was one of the hardest moments of his career, having also got injured during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. But he was hopeful of recovering in time to feature in the latter stages of the tournament.
“Today is turning into one of the most difficult moments of my career… And again in a World Cup,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I have an injury, yes, it’s annoying, it’s going to hurt, but I’m sure I’ll have a chance to come back, because I’ll do my best to help my country, my teammates and myself.”
