No player in Real Madrid history has won more trophies than Brazilian football super star Marcelo (23) .

Sixty-four years since their last meeting in a final, Real Madrid and Athletic Club again face off with silverware on the line, having not done so since the Copa del Rey in June 1958. On that occasion, Athletic were victorious. The two are powerhouses of Spanish football, with neither having ever spent a season outside of the top flight, but they haven’t met in a final in over six decades.

Courtois made his own mark on this final by saving Raul Garcia’s penalty with his trailing leg, prompting a huge cheer from the majority Madridista crowd inside the King Fahd Stadium. That save kickstarted the celebrations and the final whistle followed soon afterwards, confirming Real Madrid as the winners of the 2021/22 Spanish Super Cup.

After the match Real Madrid’s Luka Modric said ,”Hey madridistas! One more title! I hope you enjoyed the match and our first title of the year. See you soon! “

Real Madrid’s Marcelo said “Hello madridistas! It’s the first trophy of the season! We’re going for more. We’re very happy, but there is a lot more work to be done.”

Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois said ,“Athletic are tough opponents who defend well. We play more organised and they grew into the game. We almost scored an own goal and then there was the penalty. I intended to leave a foot there and my reflexes with the leg were good enough to keep it out”.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said: “We deserved to win the trophy based on the two games we’ve played here. Both games were different, but they were good games. We had to play differently in this game and played well for the first 70 minutes. We controlled the possession and defended very well. We dropped a bit deeper afterwards, but that could happen in a final. I’m very pleased, happy and we’ll carry on”.
