Film wins in seven categories
The 96th Academy Awards or the Oscars 2024 took place in Los Angeles on Sunday
where Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller ‘Oppenheimer’ emerged as the big
winner, securing victories in seven categories. The film received 13 nominations and
went on to clinch the top honours, including Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan,
marking his first-ever directing award.
The Oscars ceremony, considered the pinnacle of achievement in Hollywood, featured
the film industry's elite contesting for the prestigious honours. Oppenheimer led the
nominations with 13 nods, followed closely by Poor Things, that earned 11 nominations
and won four Oscars. Fan-favourites of millions around the world, Cillian Murphy and
Robert Downey Jr won their first Oscars for their roles in ‘Oppenheimer’.
The event was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time. In India, it was live-
streamed on Disney+ Hotstar, allowing cinema buffs to witness the glitz and glamour of
the greatest cinema awards show that is always a star-studded affair.
Emma Stone, Best Actress for ‘Poor Things’
Oppenheimer dominated the awards, practically sweeping in categories as Best Picture,
Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Film
Editing. Emma Stone won the Best Actress award for her role in ‘Poor Things’ securing
her second Oscar after her 2017 win for ‘La La Land’. The Best actress in a supporting
role went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers while the award for the
Best animated feature film went to The Boy and the Heron. The Best original screenplay
award went to Anatomy of a Fall that was hugely appreciated by audiences worldwide
and touted as a strong contender.
The Oscars 2024, as in its previous editions, celebrated outstanding achievements in
cinema, showcasing the talent and creativity of filmmakers and actors from around the
world.
