Davinson Sanchez headed home a late, late winner to finally breach a dogged Watford defence and get Tottenham new year off to the perfect start at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
Sanchez scored a stoppage-time winner as Tottenham Hotspur closed the gap on fourth-placed Arsenal to two points with a 1-0 victory against Watford.
Antonio Conte became the first manager in the club’s history to remain unbeaten in their opening eight league matches following Saturday’s victory, which made it five wins and three draws so far for the Italian.

Watford, who had not kept a clean sheet all season, defended resolutely throughout and were indebted to Daniel Bachmann, who made his first big save to keep out Sergio Reguilon’s drive on 26 minutes.
Harry Kane then fired just wide five minutes later after Watford’s Imran Louza lost possession outside his own penalty area.
Lucas Moura tested Bachmann with a stinging 50th-minute shot and the ‘keeper tipped Kane’s drive over moments later.
Watford had their chances too, as Joshua King went close with a header and had a shot saved by Hugo Lloris before Joao Pedro lashed a free-kick over.
Bachmann produced a great save to keep out Son Heung-min’s clipped effort with 18 minutes remaining before Sanchez struck in stoppage-time, flicking home Son’s superb free-kick from close range.

Always we were very solid in defence. They made a lot of crosses, but with my taller players, we were very calm. In the first half, I wasn’t happy because we missed a lot of passes, but the second half was much better.

João Pedro played a very good match and had two great chances to do something good. Also, Joshua King made a fantastic shot and [Hugo] Lloris made a very good save. What I didn’t think would happen was to concede a goal with a header. With all my tall players, to concede a goal in the last minute was a pity.
My players did everything to try to win and not concede a goal. We knew they wanted to have more space to play, and we closed all the space behind us.”
“Always, I respect the decision of the referees.”

“We restricted them to very few clear-cut chances and we're really devastated we didn't come away with a result in the end.”

After match Tottenham coach Antonio Conte said , “To celebrate the first day of the year with a win is good. Also today, our fans pushed us from the start until the end and, for sure, they deserved this win.
It was a difficult game because we played against a team well-organised defensively; they prepared this type of game but we controlled the game. We had a lot of possession and we created chances, but I think that we missed the last pass – we could do better – and also because, in this type of game, if you score early, then your opponent has to change the plan and you can find the space.”
