Mohamed Salah’s stunning second-half goal saw Liverpool beat Manchester City 1-0 in another Premier League classic between the teams at a raucous Anfield.
Salah has become only the second player in Premier League history to score 100+ left-footed goals, after Robbie Fowler (105). Wand.
The Egyptian superbly controlled Alisson’s 76th-minute clearance before spinning Joao Cancelo and racing clear to finish past Ederson.
In a contest that caught fire in the second half Manchester City had several chances to score themselves and found the back of the net early in the second half, only for Phil Foden’s effort to be ruled out following a VAR review, which identified a foul by Erling Haaland on Fabinho in the build-up.
Liverpool, who became the first team in 19 Premier League fixtures to stop City from scoring, move up to eighth place in the table on 13 points, while the defending champions remain in second on 23 points.
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said, “We conceded a goal because of a mistake, and we didn’t follow the transition,”
Alisson plays it out quick, Kevin didn’t follow, and Joao lost the duel – it is always so difficult against Salah with the way he uses his body.
This is something we have to learn for future tight games against Liverpool, but the way we played, the performance and the courage we played with was fantastic.”
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said ,”Good and very good. So, I think on a normal day you should not even try against City, play your normal against them and hope that you get something from it [is not enough]. You have to play to your limits and further, that’s what we did. We defended in an extremely well organised but very passionate way, closed the right gaps, challenged in the right areas and – because this still happens, and that’s the biggest challenge against City – they still get through. They still get to the touchline, they still have an incredible amount of players in the box and how we defended the box, and especially the six-yard box, was absolutely exceptional because I think we all know, in these games you all know the City goals when they arrive there and they have the square pass and one is waiting free in front of the goal. We did it really well. So it was a top performance from all the boys and that’s why we could win it.”
