In light of the severe economic situation that the island nation has been experiencing over the last several months, the Sri Lankan cricket community lent its support to the continuing demonstrations against the country’s administration. The nation-wide demonstrations grew more violent on Saturday, June 10, when demonstrators broke into President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s home.

 

Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya joined the demonstrators and was seen in Colombo’s streets demanding the resignation of the President.

 

In light of the severe economic situation that the island nation has been experiencing over the last several months, the Sri Lankan cricket community lent its support to the continuing demonstrations against the country’s administration. Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya joined the demonstrators and was seen in Colombo’s streets demanding the resignation of the President.

 

On social media, former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara also expressed his support. The former wicket-keeper batsman posted a video of the demonstrations with the caption, “This is for our future.” We as a country have changed course and nothing can undo that, the ex-Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene remarked, echoing the sentiment.

The country of Sri Lanka is currently experiencing its greatest economic crisis in more than 70 years. The nation has experienced a severe lack of necessities including food, gasoline, and energy since the beginning of 2022. According to reports in the local media, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president of Sri Lanka, has left the nation.

 

Hundreds of demonstrators stormed the Galle Fort, which looks out over the picturesque Galle International Cricket Stadium, interfering with the current Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia.
