Sini the new miss India

by Soumadeep Bagchi

The objective was straightforward for someone who studied finance—to work with her parents in their hotel operation. Sini Shetty, who competed in this year’s Femina Miss India competition and took home the crown, changed her professional decision, however, as a result of one incident. The Karnataka girl, who was born in Mumbai, speaks candidly about her journey as she proudly displays her crown and ribbon while flashing her stunning grin. She discusses her single-minded pursuit of her objective, her triumph, and preparing to represent India at the Miss World competition in a chat.

Even though I was vying for the crown, I was certain that all the other girls were deserving of the honour. Right up to the final second, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be the one. I gripped the girls’ hands on each side. I had no sense of anything and was completely silent. I was always praying. I didn’t recognise myself until Miss Meghalaya, whose hand I was holding, removed mine when my name was spoken. I started by checking on my parents’ reactions. As soon as my name was called, I could see them from the stage, and one of the chairs nearly fell over from their enthusiasm (laughter!). I smiled and thanked my folks as we locked eyes. After that, I gave thanks to the earth and prayed to God for allowing me to perform on her territory and be who I am.

How did it all begin for you?

Just one event later, and life changed. I was supposed to get a degree in finance while assisting my parents, who work in the hotel industry. For me, that was the most practical job path. In my 12th grade year, I began to consider competing in a pageant. You have a face and figure to be a model, a lady approached me while I was studying for my examinations in the library. Why not begin modelling?” I started laughing at that point, and when I got home, I asked myself, “Why did I laugh?” after glancing in the mirror. What was incorrect with what she said? I soon began modelling while maintaining my academic concentration at the same time. I also came to the realisation that I have the ability to inspire and influence others, and that I definitely deserved a platform where I could inspire millions of people. After receiving my diploma, I made the bold decision to compete in Miss India.

You strongly believe that every woman should be financially independent. Where does this thought come from?

My mother, who graduated first in her class in Karnataka, wed at age 21. She made the decision—which I respect—that having a family was more important than pursuing a profession. She started assisting my father with work after I became older. She once asked me, “Can you image where I would be now if I had continued my studies?” during a conversation we were having. I had that thought. My mother is a smart lady. In reality, my mother would unquestionably be the one sporting this crown if my sister and I had entered this pageant. She was a woman of incredible intellect and potential, but she sacrificed everything to start a family. She was, nevertheless, reliant on my father in terms of money. I want to encourage women all across the world to develop their own sense of identity and financial independence via my path.

Through this journey, what’s that one mantra that you have followed, also what would you like to tell the girls who wish to be a part of the pageant, but feel it’s a far-fetched dream?

Even my parents believed it would be extremely difficult to place first in this competition because there are so many girls who apply each year. These females should be confident and give it a go regardless of what people around them say or think, I want to tell them, if they genuinely want to take a chance. After all, logon kaam hai kehna, kuch toh log kahenge. Just take a peek in the mirror—you are flawless in your own unique way. Simply have faith in yourself. Break the rules that society has imposed on you.simply consider yourself and decide where you want to go. I have stuck to the same motto throughout whole trip: “Dance through your life and hustle through your path.” It kept me centred and on track toward my objective.

You will now represent India internationally at the Miss World pageant. How are you preparing for that?

I believe that there is never enough planning. In terms of culture and legacy, India has a lot to offer. I really think that nothing can stop you if you are loyal to your roots and your honest self. I have excellent mentors working with me. I’ll keep putting out my best effort and prepare. I swear I’ll bring the crown back home and represent India with pride.
