Sourav Ganguly opens up on Virat Kohli’s decision

Virat Kohli made a sudden announcement on Twitter on Saturday evening that he was to step down as India’s Test captain. The 33-year-old made the decision following the series defeat in South Africa. It followed an array of public exchanges between him and the administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the country’s top administrators.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly has stepped down from the role of India Test captain and backed skipper Virat Kohli to remain a crucial member of the Indian team. Ganguly said that Kohli’s decision to step down from Test captaincy was a “personal one” and that the BCCI respects it.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he requested Virat Kohli not to step down from ODI captaincy. Kohli had earlier stepped down from T20I captaincy after India’s 2021 World Cup campaign, naming Rohit Sharma as the new white-ball skipper. The 33-year-old was replaced by Sachin Tendulkar as India’s limited-overs skipper in December last year.

Kohli ended his tenure as Test captain with 40 wins and 11 draws in 68 matches.
