Former Mayor of Kolkata and erstwhile TMC leader Sovan Chatterjee today lashed out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said ` it was not possible for me to continue the way she was running the party. Only to keep her respect I never opened up on the floor of assembly. When time arrives, I shall open up every thing’’. A couple of years ago a controversy erupted on the number of housing between Mamata and Sovan on the floor of the Assembly.Sovan joined BJP in August 2019.
The party today felicitated the Sovan and his accomplice Baisakhi Banerjee at a road show organized by the party between Golpark and Selimpur in South Kolkata. One week ago, Sovan and Baisakhi had stayed away on health grounds from an earlier road show arranged by the BJP. It triggered ofa controversy within the party with Sovan’s relevance being questioned by party bosses. As it was a face loss for BJP Sovan was given a stricture to make up for the party’s ignominy which he did in today’s road show.

Sovan is appointed as BJP’s Kolkata election committee observer along with party MP Arjun Singh. Baisakhi is a co-convenor. Political observers feel, as TMC doors are shut for Sovan he has no alternative but to accept BJP’s stricture. Sovan is one of BJP’s prize catch alongside Mukul Roy and Suvendu Adhikary. In 2018 Mamata had removed Sovan from all positions. Besides being the city Mayor Sovan was a minister in the state cabinet.
As a regimented party with ideological moorings in back ground, it seems BJP is keenly observing Sovan’s chemistry with Baisakhi. For one-year Sovan remained out of active politics and was rehabilitated recently when BJP found him a place in the party’s 240-member extended state election committee. He was given the prime job to penetrate Mamata’s strongestcitadel Kolkata with 11 seats.
Kolkata, S 24 pargana and N 24 Pargana’s 75 seats is TMC’s bull’s eye in the upcoming 2021 state polls.
