Sri Lankan mystery spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been handed an official reprimand for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against Afghanistan at Pallikal on Wednesday. Hasaranga was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with ‘showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match’.
In addition, he also received a demerit point, his first in a span of 24 months. Along with this, a maximum fine of 50 percent of the match fee was also imposed. The incident happened in the 26th over of Afghanistan’s innings. In fact, on Hasranga’s appeal, the on-field umpire declared Afghanistan batsman Najibullah Zadran out. Hasaranga then showed his displeasure by pointing to the giant screen. However, after the match Hasaranga pleaded guilty and accepted the penalty proposed by match referee Ranjan Madugalle. Therefore there was no need for a formal hearing. Hasaranga was charged by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Lyndon Hannibal, third umpire Ravindra Wimalsari and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge.
Level-1 breaches carry a minimum official reprimand, a fine of 50 per cent of the player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. Talking about the match, after winning the toss and batting first, Afghanistan scored 313 runs losing eight wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Ibrahim Zadran played an inning of 162 runs in 138 balls with the help of 15 fours and four sixes. Apart from this, Najibullah scored 77 runs in 76 balls. Rajitha took three wickets and Hasaranga took two wickets from Sri Lanka.
