1 Indian Killed, 15 of 16 Rescued from Safesea Vishnu Attack Near Iraq: MEA

Amid Middle East tensions, the Indian Embassy in Baghdad confirmed that one Indian crew member was killed and 15 of 16 Indians rescued from the US-owned tanker Safesea Vishnu after an attack near Iraq’s Basra port on March 11.

“On March 11, 2026, a US-owned crude oil tanker Safesea Vishnu, sailing under the Marshall Islands flag, was attacked near Basra, Iraq, in which one Indian crew member unfortunately lost his life. The remaining 15 Indian crew have since been evacuated to a safe place,” the embassy posted on X.

Medical and Embassy Support: The rescued crew members were evacuated to safety, with several receiving medical aid for injuries. The Indian government, through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and a Quick Response Team, has been providing assistance and maintaining contact with the survivors’ families.
