Himanta Biswa Sarma Slams Mamata Banerjee Over SIR Protest and Women’s Reservation Stand

Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a sharp political attack on Mamata Banerjee, questioning her stance on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and her past position on women’s reservation.
Speaking on the ongoing controversy, Sarma said, “Have the people whose names have been deleted from the SIR taken to the streets? Those who object aren’t protesting, while Mamata Banerjee is. The SIR should be opposed in Bangladesh, not in West Bengal.”
He further intensified his criticism by referring to Banerjee’s role in Parliament, stating, “The women of the country are angry with what Mamata Banerjee, who herself is a woman Chief Minister, did in Parliament. After opposing women’s reservation, Mamata Banerjee is no longer even contesting the elections.”

The remarks come amid escalating political tensions between the BJP and Trinamool Congress, particularly over voter list revisions and representation issues. While Banerjee has been vocal in opposing the SIR process, Sarma’s comments aim to question both the legitimacy of the protests and her broader political positioning on gender representation.

The exchange is likely to further intensify the political narrative ahead of upcoming electoral battles, especially in eastern India where both leaders hold significant influence.
