In a monumental shift for the world’s most valuable tech giant, Apple announced today that Tim Cook will transition from his role as Chief Executive Officer to become the Executive Chairman of the Board. Taking his place as CEO is John Ternus, the company’s current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
The transition is set to take effect on September 1, 2026, following what the board described as a “thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.”
A $4 Trillion Legacy
Tim Cook’s tenure, which began in 2011 following the passing of Steve Jobs, has been defined by a masterclass in operational excellence and financial growth. Under his watch, Apple didn’t just grow; it transformed the global economic landscape.
Cook’s tenure saw Apple’s market value explode from approximately $350 billion to a staggering $4 trillion. This growth represents a more than 1,000% increase, fueled by the expansion of the iPhone ecosystem, the dominance of Wearables, and a high-margin Services division that now rivals Fortune 50 companies on its own.
In a statement to employees, Cook expressed his confidence in the future:
”It has been the greatest privilege of my life to lead such an extraordinary company. John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity. He is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future.”
John Ternus is a 25-year veteran of Apple, widely respected for his deep technical expertise and focus on product excellence. Since joining the product design team in 2001, he has been instrumental in the development of:
The Mac Transition to Apple Silicon: Overseeing the shift that revitalized the Mac lineup.
iPad & AirPods: Leading hardware development for these category-defining products.
Sustainability Initiatives: Driving the use of recycled materials and 3D-printed titanium in recent hardware releases.
As Executive Chairman, Cook will remain deeply involved in Apple’s high-level strategy, specifically focusing on global policy and engagement with international leaders. Meanwhile, the industry is already speculating on Ternus’s first major moves—navigating the next frontier of spatial computing via Vision Pro and Apple’s deepening integration of generative AI.
