Kharge Alleges Misuse of Power by PM Modi, Questions Election Commission’s Neutrality

Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress, launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a public rally in Chennai.
Kharge said that as Prime Minister, Modi should exercise restraint

in his remarks, particularly during election periods, as such statements directly impact the democratic process. He accused the Prime Minister of misusing governmental authority and machinery to target opposition leaders and parties.

“He is misusing his power and government machinery to malign opposition parties. Whenever he gets an opportunity, he targets individuals,” Kharge said during his address.

Raising concerns over the role of the Election Commission of India, Kharge alleged that the poll body has failed to act impartially. He suggested that the Commission appears to be functioning under the influence of the Prime Minister, and warned that proposed powers related to delimitation could further consolidate control.

“If this continues, Indian democracy will be weakened, and the people of the country will not get justice,” he added.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of upcoming elections, with opposition parties increasingly questioning the functioning of key democratic institutions.
