In a historic leap for infrastructure and regional connectivity, India on Thursday witnessed the launch of the first-ever direct Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu and Srinagar—linking the twin capitals of Jammu & Kashmir through a seamless, all-weather rail network.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the 20-coach semi-high-speed train, marking a defining milestone in the decades-long effort to integrate the Kashmir Valley with the national railway grid. The event was attended by Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister Jitendra Singh, among other senior officials.
This newly launched service transforms travel across the region—cutting journey time, improving reliability, and offering a modern, comfortable alternative through some of the most challenging terrains in the Himalayas.
A Long-Awaited Engineering Breakthrough
The Jammu–Srinagar rail link is part of the ambitious ₹43,780-crore Kashmir railway project, initiated in the late 1990s. While railway lines reached Udhampur as early as 2005 and operations began within the Kashmir Valley in 2008, the formidable Pir Panjal mountain range remained the biggest obstacle.
It was only in 2025 that the final breakthrough came, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Katra–Srinagar section, completing the critical connection. The extension of services to Jammu Tawi now establishes a continuous rail corridor from Jammu to Srinagar.

Designed for speed, safety, and passenger comfort, the Vande Bharat Express offers state-of-the-art amenities while navigating tunnels, bridges, and steep gradients across the Himalayan landscape. A successful trial run between Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra stations preceded the official launch.
