In a stern statement on social media, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned Israel’s latest violation of international law following the assault on a civilian flotilla in waters outside its territorial jurisdiction. The flotilla, which was operating in international waters, was forcibly intercepted by Israeli forces, marking a serious infringement on maritime rights and freedoms.
PM Sánchez confirmed that the Spanish government is taking all necessary steps to protect and assist the detained Spaniards, who were part of the flotilla. He emphasized, however, that such actions are not enough. Sánchez called on the European Union to immediately suspend the association agreement with Israel, urging the bloc to take stronger action against Israel’s disregard for international law.
“We must stand firm in defending the rule of law at sea. Israel’s actions are a blatant violation of international agreements, and the EU must demand that Prime Minister Netanyahu comply with the law of the seas,” Sánchez declared in his post.
The call for EU intervention comes amidst growing international concern over Israel’s repeated violations of maritime law, further escalating tensions in the region. The European Union has yet to respond to the demand for immediate sanctions, but pressure from member states like Spain continues to mount.
