UN Chief Guterres Welcomes BRICS Declaration’s Strong Commitment to Multilateralism
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration at the BRICS Summit, highlighting its strong commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations.
Speaking on the declaration, Guterres noted that although not all members of the UN Security Council were present at the BRICS meeting, the unanimous statement demonstrated that a large number of major global powers continue to view multilateralism as the preferred approach to addressing international crises.
Guterres said the declaration's commitment to the United Nations was “reassuring,” stressing that the UN should remain at the centre of international efforts to tackle global challenges.
The remarks come against the backdrop of divisions within the UN Security Council. Guterres's comments underline the significance of the BRICS declaration as a collective reaffirmation of international cooperation and the role of multilateral institutions.
