The West Bengal Emergency Helpline 112 has been officially rolled out along with a fleet of 900 Emergency Response Support System vehicles, as the state moves to improve response times for police and other emergency situations.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched the ERSS-112 system at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on October 10, unveiling 450 four-wheelers and 450 motorcycles for deployment across the state.
900 Emergency Vehicles Deployed Across 450 Police Stations
Under the initial rollout, one four-wheeler and one motorcycle are being provided to each of 450 police stations.
Adhikari said the fleet would be expanded further, with the longer-term aim of providing additional emergency vehicles to police stations across West Bengal.
The new vehicles form part of the Emergency Response Support System and are intended to enable police personnel to reach people in distress more quickly.
Today, we officially flagged off an extensive fleet of dedicated Emergency Response Vehicles to strengthen the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) across the state. Citizens Can Dial 112 for Emergency Assistance
The West Bengal Emergency Helpline 112 provides a single emergency number through which citizens can seek assistance.
The broader ERSS platform is designed to coordinate emergency responses through a unified system, making it easier for citizens to contact authorities during urgent situations.
According to reports on the rollout, the service will operate round the clock.
GPS and Digital Communication to Support Response Teams
According to the Chief Minister’s announcement, the dedicated ERSS vehicles are equipped with technology including GPS tracking, mobile communication facilities and tablets linked to emergency control systems.
These systems are intended to allow control rooms to coordinate the nearest available response unit and help teams reach emergency locations with less delay.
Government Targets Faster Police Response
While launching the system, Adhikari said reducing emergency response time was a major objective of the initiative.
He said West Bengal Police’s average emergency response time was around 90 minutes, compared with approximately 10–15 minutes for Kolkata Police, which has greater availability of personnel and vehicles.
He also referred to states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, where he said emergency response times can be between six and 10 minutes.
More Emergency Vehicles Planned
Adhikari described the rollout as the beginning of a broader expansion.
He said the government intends to provide four motorcycles and four cars to every police station within the next year. The state cabinet has also approved recruitment of 1,500 drivers to support the expanding fleet.
ERSS Aims to Strengthen Citizen-Friendly Policing
The launch of the West Bengal Emergency Helpline 112 combines a unified emergency contact system with dedicated vehicles and digital coordination.
The initiative is intended to improve police mobility, shorten response times and provide citizens with a simpler way to request emergency assistance across the state.
