Hardeep Singh Puri Marks IFS Day, Reflects on Diplomatic Journey
Hardeep Singh Puri IFS Day message paid tribute to members of India’s diplomatic fraternity as the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas reflected on his decades-long career in diplomacy, multilateral negotiations, national security and strategic affairs.
On Indian Foreign Service Day, Puri said representing India at international forums had been both an honour and a profound responsibility. He recalled several assignments that shaped his career and deepened his appreciation for diplomats serving in challenging circumstances around the world.
Puri Recalls Work at GATT and WTO
Puri highlighted his work at the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, where he served as Chair of the Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures.
He also referred to his association with UNDP and UNCTAD during the Uruguay Round negotiations, which ultimately led to the establishment of the World Trade Organization.
According to Puri, his role on GATT and WTO dispute settlement panels was among the most fulfilling parts of his diplomatic career.
National Security and Defence Cooperation
The Hardeep Singh Puri IFS Day message also touched on his tenure as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
During that period, Puri worked on defence planning, coordination among the three Services and international defence cooperation.
He also led Indian delegations for India-US dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation, adding another strategic dimension to his diplomatic experience.
Colombo Posting and India-Sri Lanka Relations
Puri said his posting in Colombo brought him into the middle of a crucial phase in India-Sri Lanka relations.
He referred to diplomatic efforts linked to the 1987 Accord and described the assignment as one of the important chapters of his career.
UN Security Council and Counter-Terrorism Role
Later, as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Puri represented the country during its presidencies of the UN Security Council in 2011 and 2012.
He also chaired the Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee.
His UN assignment, he said, gave him a deeper understanding of peacekeeping diplomacy, including India’s contribution to the UN mission in Sudan and the transition that led to the creation of South Sudan in 2011.
Tribute to Indian Diplomats Worldwide
Puri said these experiences were both humbling and enriching and helped him appreciate the dedication of Indian diplomats and personnel serving abroad.
He emphasised that the Indian Foreign Service offers unique opportunities to serve the country and advance India’s interests internationally.
The Hardeep Singh Puri IFS Day message concluded with warm greetings to the entire Indian Foreign Service fraternity and recognition of its role in representing India across the world.
