The exchange took place in the presence of Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden and highlighted the deep civilizational, cultural, and intellectual ties between India and Sweden.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, could not travel to Sweden in 1913 to personally receive the prestigious honor. He later visited Sweden in 1921 and was received by King Gustav V, marking a significant moment in cultural diplomacy between the two nations.

This year also carries historical significance as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of Gurudev Tagore’s landmark visit to Sweden in 1926, reaffirming the timeless connection between India and Sweden through literature, culture, and shared intellectual values.

The gesture during Prime Minister Modi’s Sweden visit reflects the continued celebration of Rabindranath Tagore’s influence and the strengthening of bilateral cultural relations between the two countries.
