PM Modi said 12 semiconductor chip-making projects have been approved so far, with the number expected to rise during the next phase of the government’s semiconductor programme.
He also highlighted the expanded India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, whose outlay has been increased to USD 13.5 billion, compared with USD 8 billion under the first phase.
The Prime Minister said the government is working to provide manufacturers with the policies, regulatory framework and other support required to establish and expand semiconductor operations in India.
Building a Full Semiconductor Ecosystem
India is seeking to develop a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem that extends beyond chip design and assembly. The strategy includes semiconductor fabrication, advanced packaging, testing, equipment, materials, research and development, and talent development.
The initiative is also aimed at strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on concentrated global supply chains.
India is seeking to leverage its large pool of engineering talent, growing domestic market and strategic position as global companies look to diversify semiconductor supply chains.
The government is backing the sector with significant incentives while seeking investments from global semiconductor and technology companies to develop an integrated industry covering chip design, fabrication, packaging and testing.
Applied Materials Announces USD 5 Billion Investment
Adding momentum to India’s semiconductor ambitions, Applied Materials announced plans on Thursday to invest USD 5 billion under its Vision 2035 initiative.
The investment is aimed at integrating India’s semiconductor ecosystem more closely with the global value chain.
The announcement comes as India seeks to establish itself as a significant global centre for semiconductor manufacturing and electronics production.
