President Donald Trump Defends 100% Tariff on Chinese Cars, Says Move Protected U.S. Auto Industry

In a strong statement on trade policy, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his decision to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese automobile imports, describing it as a crucial step to safeguard the American auto industry. Referring to the growing global influence of China in the automobile sector, Trump stated that Chinese car manufacturers are “destroying Europe” by taking away substantial business from established brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Trump emphasized that the United States has largely avoided an influx of Chinese vehicles due to these tariffs. He argued that without such protectionist measures, iconic American companies like General Motors and Ford Motor Company could have faced severe disruption. Highlighting a rare instance of policy continuity, Trump noted that his predecessor, Joe Biden, retained the tariff policy during his tenure. “In all fairness to Biden, he allowed it to stay on… it’s about the only thing he did good,” Trump remarked. The statement comes amid ongoing global trade tensions and increasing competition in the electric vehicle and automotive sectors, with tariffs continuing to play a central role in shaping international trade dynamics.
