Seattle Becomes First US City to Host Swami Vivekananda Statue at Westlake Square In a landmark moment for cultural diplomacy and global heritage, the Seattle has become the first city government in the United States to host a life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda. The iconic bronze monument was unveiled at the bustling Westlake Square Park in the heart of downtown. A Cultural Landmark in Seattle’s Urban Core Located at the prestigious Westlake Square, one of Seattle’s most vibrant public spaces with over 400,000 daily visitors, the monument stands as a symbol of unity and inclusivity. The site is strategically positioned near major landmarks including Amazon Spheres, the Seattle Convention Center, and the Seattle Center Monorail. Swami Vivekananda Statue Unveiled in Seattle, Marking Landmark India-US Cultural Ties Dignitaries Attend Grand Unveiling The unveiling ceremony was graced by several prominent leaders from the Greater Seattle region, including: Katie Wilson – Mayor of Seattle Dana Ralph – Mayor of Kent Nancy Backus – Mayor of Auburn Tom McLeod – Mayor of Tukwila Eric Zimmerman – Mayor of Normandy Park Kelly Curtis – Mayor of Kirkland The event also saw the participation of community leaders from the Indian-American diaspora, along with members of city councils from Bellevue, Bothell, DuPont, and Redmo Strengthening India-US Cultural Bonds In her address, Mayor Katie Wilson underscored that the installation of the Swami Vivekananda Monument reflects Seattle’s inclusive spirit and strengthens cultural ties between India and the diverse metropolitan tech hub in the US Pacific Northwest. The monument has been gifted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations as part of India’s broader cultural diplomacy initiative. The unveiling coincided with the celebration of ICCR Day, reinforcing efforts to deepen people-to-people connections between India and the United States. A Tribute to a Global Spiritual Icon Swami Vivekananda, one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders, played a pivotal role in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. The Seattle monument has been sculpted by renowned Indian artist Naresh Kumar Kumawat, whose body of work includes over 600 installations across more than 80 countries—serving as enduring symbols of India’s cultural legacy worldwide.
