US Navy Begins Mine-Clearing Effort in Strait of Hormuz as CENTCOM Launches New Security Corridor

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces have begun setting conditions for clearing naval mines in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz on April 11, following coordinated operations by two US Navy guided-missile destroyers.

The USS Frank E. Peterson (DDG-121) and USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112) transited the Strait of Hormuz and operated in the Arabian Gulf as part of a broader mission aimed at ensuring the waterway is fully cleared of sea mines allegedly laid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” said Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM.

CENTCOM confirmed that additional US assets, including underwater drones, will join the clearance operations in the coming days. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime trade corridors, with a significant share of global energy shipments passing through the narrow passage.
