West Bengal Government on heritage and cultural identity has renewed its emphasis on protecting the state's cultural traditions and restoring what it describes as its rich heritage. The statement invoked the legacies of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukerjee and Swami Pranavananda while outlining a vision of governance based on the principle of “Bahujana Sukhaya, Bahujana Hitaya” — the welfare and happiness of the many.

According to the statement, the government views the state's political history over several decades as a period during which Bengal's cultural values and identity were allegedly weakened. It claimed that 34 years of Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, rule undermined traditional values, while 15 years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) governance attempted to alter the state's identity.

The government has presented its current political agenda as an effort to move beyond this period and focus on cultural heritage, public welfare and a renewed sense of identity.

West Bengal Government Highlights Cultural Heritage

The West Bengal Government on heritage and cultural identity has placed cultural preservation at the centre of the statement.

West Bengal has a long and diverse cultural history shaped by literature, spirituality, art, education, social reform and political movements. The statement argued that protecting this heritage should be an important part of governance.

It also emphasised the need to preserve traditions while ensuring that government policies remain focused on the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Legacy of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukerjee

The statement referred to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukerjee as an important source of inspiration for its political and cultural vision.

Mukerjee, a prominent political figure from Bengal, played a significant role in India's political history. His legacy continues to feature prominently in political discussions surrounding Bengal's identity, nationalism and public life.

The government said it intends to draw inspiration from his legacy while pursuing its broader vision for the state.

Swami Pranavananda's Legacy Also Highlighted

The statement also invoked the legacy of Swami Pranavananda, founder of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha.
