Here are some warning signs that may indicate your body is not getting enough protein.

1. Constant fatigue and weakness

“One of the most common signs of protein deficiency is persistent fatigue,” says Dr Aravind. Protein helps maintain muscle mass and energy levels. When protein intake is insufficient, the body may begin breaking down muscle tissue for energy, leading to constant tiredness and weakness.

2. Muscle loss and weakness

Protein is crucial for maintaining strong muscles. A lack of protein can lead to muscle atrophy, reduced strength, and difficulty performing daily physical activities.

3. Frequent illnesses

Protein plays a vital role in producing antibodies that help the body fight infections. When protein levels are low, the immune system weakens, making a person more susceptible to frequent illnesses and slower recovery.

4. Hair loss

Hair is largely made up of a protein called keratin. Insufficient protein intake can weaken hair structure, resulting in thinning hair and increased hair fall over time.

5. Swelling in the body

Protein deficiency may lead to edema, a condition where excess fluid accumulates in body tissues. Proteins help maintain fluid balance in the bloodstream, and low levels can cause swelling, especially in the legs, feet, or hands.

6. Brittle nails and dry skin

Proteins support healthy skin and nail growth. A deficiency can result in brittle nails, dry skin, and reduced skin elasticity, indicating that the body may need more protein.
