In a powerful display of democratic fervor, West Bengal recorded an estimated 89.99% voter turnout till 5 pm today in the second and final phase of the 2026 Assembly Elections. This robust participation follows a record-breaking Phase 1, signaling a high-stakes mandate that could redefine the state’s political landscape for the next five years.

The Battle of Bhawanipur: A Prestige Fight
The spotlight remained firmly on the Bhawanipur constituency, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced off against her arch-rival and Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. The atmosphere was electric as both leaders were spotted in the same polling booth area in Chakraberia earlier today. While no direct interaction took place, the proximity of the two titans underlined the “do-or-die” nature of this election.

Phase 2 Turnout: District-Wise Breakdown
The Election Commission of India (ECI) reported high engagement across all 142 seats contested today. Urban centers and rural strongholds alike showed immense enthusiasm:

District Voter Turnout (Till 5 PM)
Purba Bardhaman 92.46%
Hooghly 90.34%
Howrah 89.44%
North 24 Parganas 89.74%
Kolkata South 86.11%
Security arrangements remained stringent throughout the day, with central forces deployed across sensitive polling booths to ensure a smooth and peaceful voting process. While minor incidents of tension were reported in isolated pockets, polling largely progressed without major disruptions.

Political observers believe that such a high turnout could significantly influence the final outcome, as it often reflects a decisive voter sentiment. The participation of women voters and rural populations was particularly notable, contributing to the overall surge in polling percentages.
With the conclusion of polling, all eyes now turn to the Exit Polls, which are expected to be released after 6:30 pm today. The final counting of votes and the declaration of results are scheduled for May 4, 2026.
