Amritsar shooting kills Teerath Singh; four suspects named
An Amritsar shooting on Monday evening killed Teerath Singh near a gurdwara in Cheete Kalan village and left his friend Ranjit Singh injured, officials said. The men were heading back after offering prayers when the attack occurred.
Both were taken to hospital after the firing. Doctors declared Teerath dead on arrival, while Ranjit was receiving treatment and was reported to be out of danger, according to police.
The village falls within the jurisdiction of Chatiwind police station. Police said an FIR had been lodged against four suspects on the basis of the family’s complaint, but none had been arrested when the reports were filed.
Police examine rivalry behind the attack
Attari deputy superintendent of police Yadwinder Singh said initial inquiries pointed towards a longstanding land-related dispute. He said the preliminary findings did not suggest political rivalry as the reason for the Amritsar shooting.
The family offered a different account of the immediate trigger. Relatives alleged that Teerath had stopped the accused from taking drugs two days before the attack.
Reports linked Teerath’s family to the Aam Aadmi Party, although they differed over which relative held the village sarpanch’s position. His brother Karaj Singh was also described as holding a role associated with the party.
Police identified four alleged attackers and formed teams to pursue them. Raids to locate the accused were continuing, according to the police account.
The killing also drew criticism from former Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, who questioned the Punjab government’s handling of public safety. In a social media post, he called for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take responsibility and ensure the protection of residents.
