Apple iPhone Duo: First Foldable iPhone Arrives With Premium Design and a Massive Price Tag

Apple has officially stepped into the foldable smartphone segment with the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone. Rather than making the folding mechanism feel like an experiment, Apple has focused on delivering an experience that remains unmistakably familiar to existing iPhone users.

The iPhone Duo combines a compact outer screen with a much larger foldable display, Apple's latest A20 Pro chipset, a titanium construction, a 48MP dual-camera setup and software designed specifically to take advantage of the additional screen space.

However, Apple's entry into the foldable market comes at an extraordinary premium. With its price approaching Rs 3 lakh in India, the iPhone Duo sits firmly at the luxury end of the smartphone market.

iPhone Duo Design: Familiar iPhone Feel With a Foldable Twist

One of the biggest achievements of the iPhone Duo is its design. Despite being Apple's first foldable device, it does not immediately feel like an experimental first-generation product.

When folded, the phone features a 5.4-inch outer display, making it relatively compact and suitable for everyday tasks such as checking notifications, sending messages and browsing social media.

Opening the device transforms it into a much larger productivity and entertainment screen.

Apple has used Grade 5 titanium for the frame and hinge cover, while Ceramic Shield protection is provided on the exterior. The hinge has been engineered to provide a smooth opening and closing experience without making the device feel overly fragile.

Apple has also given the iPhone Duo an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

At around 254 grams, the Duo is certainly heavier than a conventional smartphone, although its weight is distributed across the larger foldable body.

7.6-Inch Foldable Super Retina XDR Display

The display is arguably the biggest attraction of the iPhone Duo.

While the 5.4-inch external screen handles regular smartphone tasks, unfolding the device reveals a huge 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display.

The additional screen space makes the Duo particularly suitable for video streaming, gaming, reading and multitasking.

Both displays support ProMotion technology with refresh rates of up to 120Hz, along with Always-On display functionality and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits.

Apple has also worked to reduce one of the most common complaints associated with foldable smartphones: the visible crease running through the centre of the display.

Although the crease has not disappeared completely, it is designed to be significantly less distracting during everyday use. A nano-texture finish on the internal display also helps minimise reflections and glare.

Another notable design choice is the internal FaceTime camera. Apple has positioned the camera underneath the display, eliminating the need for a visible punch-hole and providing a cleaner viewing experience on the large screen.

A20 Pro Chip Powers Apple's First Foldable

At the heart of the iPhone Duo is Apple's latest A20 Pro processor.

The chipset reportedly features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine, while offering considerably higher memory bandwidth than its predecessor.

The A20 Pro is manufactured using a 2nm process, allowing Apple to improve performance while maintaining power efficiency.

Apple has also introduced a custom vapour chamber cooling system to help maintain performance during demanding workloads such as gaming, AI processing and intensive multitasking.

The additional processing power becomes especially important because Apple has redesigned parts of iOS 27 for the foldable display.

Users can run apps alongside one another and take advantage of the larger internal screen for productivity. Apple Intelligence and Siri's AI capabilities are also supported by the A20 Pro's Neural Engine.

iPhone Duo Camera: Dual 48MP Fusion Setup

The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system.

The rear camera configuration includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion ultra-wide camera.

The main sensor also provides a 2x optical-quality telephoto option, while the ultra-wide camera offers a 120-degree field of view.

The foldable design introduces some additional photography possibilities. Users can position the phone at different angles without requiring a separate stand, while the external display can function as a preview screen.

This also makes it possible to use the higher-quality rear cameras for selfies while seeing the composition on the outer display.

However, photography does not appear to be the primary reason for choosing the Duo over Apple's conventional Pro-series iPhones. Buyers looking specifically for Apple's most advanced camera hardware may still find the standard Pro lineup more attractive.

Battery Life and Fast Charging

Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with a dual-battery architecture, supported by the efficiency improvements of the A20 Pro processor and Apple's C2 modem.

The company claims the device can provide all-day battery life.

According to Apple's figures, the Duo can deliver up to 31 hours of video playback using the internal display and up to 44 hours when using the outer screen.

Fast wired charging can reportedly recharge the battery to around 50 percent in approximately 20 minutes with a compatible charger.

Real-world battery performance will ultimately depend on how frequently users rely on the power-hungry 7.6-inch internal display.

iPhone Duo Price in India

The iPhone Duo is positioned as one of Apple's most premium smartphones ever.

With a starting price close to Rs 3 lakh in India, the device is clearly not intended to become a mainstream iPhone immediately.

Instead, Apple appears to be targeting technology enthusiasts, premium smartphone buyers and existing Apple users who want the company's most advanced and distinctive iPhone experience.

Verdict: Apple's Most Ambitious iPhone Yet

The iPhone Duo represents one of the biggest changes to the iPhone form factor in years.

Apple has taken a relatively cautious approach to the foldable market, allowing competitors to establish the category before introducing its own interpretation.

That strategy appears to have resulted in a device focused heavily on refinement. The titanium construction, smooth hinge, reduced display crease, large 120Hz Super Retina XDR screen and powerful A20 Pro processor all contribute to making the Duo feel more mature than a typical first-generation product.

Its biggest obstacle is undoubtedly the price.

At nearly Rs 3 lakh, the iPhone Duo is a luxury technology product rather than a routine upgrade for most iPhone owners.

For buyers primarily interested in cameras, value or a conventional smartphone experience, Apple's regular Pro models may remain the more practical choice. But for users who want Apple's latest technology combined with a genuinely different iPhone form factor, the Duo delivers something that no traditional iPhone can offer.
