Arthur Fils celebrates after defeating Frances Tiafoe in the Cincinnati Open final

Arthur Fils has etched his name into tennis history after defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 in the Cincinnati Open final to capture his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title.

At just 22, Fils became the youngest Frenchman to win a Masters 1000 crown, completing a remarkable breakthrough at one of the biggest tournaments on the ATP calendar.

The final also carried major historical significance, becoming the first ATP Masters 1000 final contested between two Black players.

Fils Takes Control in the First Set

Fils made an explosive start, dominating from the baseline and maintaining impressive efficiency on serve. He dropped just three points on serve and fired eight aces as he took the opening set 6-3 in 29 minutes.

Tiafoe responded strongly in the second set. The American broke early and capitalised on a rise in Fils' unforced errors to level the contest with a 6-1 set victory.

Decisive Third-Set Masterclass

The deciding set belonged entirely to Fils.
After surviving an early 0-30 deficit in the opening game, the Frenchman produced a relentless barrage of winners and completely overwhelmed Tiafoe. Fils raced through the final set 6-0 to secure the biggest title of his career.

The victory is particularly significant given Fils' recent struggles with injuries. Back and hip problems forced him to endure extended layoffs over the past year, making his Cincinnati breakthrough a powerful comeback story.

Career-Best Ranking

Fils' Masters 1000 triumph will also propel him from World No. 21 to a career-high No. 11 in the ATP rankings.

With the US Open beginning just one week after his Cincinnati triumph, Fils arrives at Flushing Meadows with confidence, momentum and a major opportunity to establish himself among the sport's rising stars.

His victory over Tiafoe makes the 22-year-old one of the most intriguing dark horses for the final Grand Slam of the season.
