Mark Carney and Friedrich Merz Discuss Stronger Canada-Germany Ties

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss strengthening cooperation between Canada and Germany across defence, security, energy and artificial intelligence.

The leaders highlighted growing bilateral collaboration, noting that the two countries have signed agreements covering AI, quantum and battery technologies over the past year. Canada and Germany have also launched the Sovereign Technology Alliance and secured more than six new partnerships focused on critical minerals.

Last month, Carney and Merz launched negotiations toward a Canada-Germany Strategic Partnership Agreement. The proposed agreement is aimed at expanding cooperation in key areas including security and defence, emerging technologies, supply chains and raw materials, energy and space.

Following their participation in the Coalition of the Willing meeting, the two leaders also reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine. They stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia in pursuit of a just and lasting peace.

Prime Minister Carney and Chancellor Merz agreed to remain in close contact as Canada and Germany work to further strengthen their strategic partnership.
