Cape Verde Continue Fairytale With Uruguay Draw

Cape Verde continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign by securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw against former world champions Uruguay at Miami Stadium, extending their unbeaten run against football heavyweights after a goalless draw with Spain.

The island nation stunned Uruguay by taking an early lead through a moment of brilliance from Kevin Pina. After Telmo Arcanjo won a free-kick 34 yards from goal, Pina unleashed a powerful effort that pierced a gap in the wall and nestled into the bottom corner, leaving the Uruguayan goalkeeper with no chance.

Uruguay responded strongly and turned the match around before halftime with two quick goals. Maxi Araujo equalized after Rodrigo Bentancur’s header struck the post and rebounded into his path. Moments later, Agustin Canobbio completed the comeback by calmly finishing after a clever knock-down from Araujo.

Despite trailing at the break, Cape Verde refused to back down. Bubista’s side found a way back into the contest when Varela capitalized on a defensive mix-up in the Uruguayan backline and slotted the ball home to restore parity.

Uruguay dominated possession and created several chances in the second half, with legendary striker Luis Suarez watching from the stands. However, Cape Verde’s resilient defense, expertly marshalled by Pico Lopes and Sidny Lopes Cabral, stood firm to deny the South Americans a winning goal.

Kevin Pina’s stunning free-kick and commanding midfield performance earned him the Player of the Match award as Cape Verde celebrated another memorable result on football’s biggest stage.

Bubista Praises Team's Fighting Spirit
Speaking after the match, Cape Verde head coach Bubista praised his players for their courage, determination and resilience.
"I want to congratulate the team and all of our people for the way we played, with our hearts. We finished the match under a lot of difficulty, with many players already suffering from cramps."
