In a significant political statement ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Jairam Ramesh, General Secretary of the Indian National Congress, launched a sharp attack on both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), calling them “two sides of the same coin.”
Positioning Congress as a fresh political force in the state, Ramesh asserted that West Bengal no longer needs what he described as an “old coin” represented by TMC and BJP, but instead requires a “new coin” — a credible third alternative that Congress aims to offer.
Highlighting the party’s roadmap, Ramesh underscored the Congress manifesto, which introduces five key guarantees designed to appeal to a wide voter base. These include financial assistance for women, income support for farmers, and free electricity for the agricultural sector — measures the party claims will bring tangible relief and economic stability.

Emphasizing an independent political strategy, Ramesh confirmed that Congress will contest the elections solo in West Bengal. He described the manifesto launch as a “booster dose” for party workers, aimed at energizing grassroots campaigns and strengthening the party’s presence across the state.
The remarks signal a clear attempt by Congress to carve out its own political space in a state traditionally dominated by TMC and BJP, setting the stage for a potentially triangular contest in the upcoming elections.
